Residency program to obtain the title: "Diplomate"
A. Prerequisites
Completed studies in veterinary medicine, with a diploma from an internationally recognized university
Completion of a recognized internship program or equivalent one to two years of practical work experience at a small animal veterinary clinic
Good language skills in German and English
B. Training objectives
Acquisition of detailed practical and theoretical knowledge in the specialist field of small animal internal medicine (diagnosis, therapy and care of dogs and cats with internal diseases)
Develop the ability to plan, conduct and publish a scientific study in a field of small animal medicine.
Fulfillment of the requirements for admission to the specialist examinations of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Companion Animals and successful completion.
C.1a. Cardiology training program
The program consists of 36 months of training at the Small Animal Clinic of the University of Munich, Department of Cardiology, under the direction of Dr. Gerhard Wess with frequent rotations through the Department of Internal Medicine.
C.1b. Medical training program
The program consists of 4 years of training at the Small Animal Clinic of the University of Munich, with rotations through the Departments of Dermatology, Cardiology and Neurology. One year of the residency takes place at the University of Georgia in Athens, USA. We currently have 5 Diplomates from the European College as trainers, 3 of whom are Diplomates in Internal Medicine.
C.2 Further training
Residents are encouraged and familiarized with the latest knowledge through active participation in in-house book discussions, journal clubs and continuing education seminars.
Participation in veterinary congresses in Germany and abroad is encouraged and supported wherever possible.
C.3 Teaching
The residents actively participate in the training of students during their rotations in the clinic and during internships as part of the new curriculum. They are involved in continuing education events for veterinarians in practice and their skills in giving lectures and teaching are promoted.
C.4 Research
During the course of their training, the assistants carry out a research project under the guidance of a mentor (OA or Prof), which is published in an international journal. This also fulfills part of the requirements for admission to the ACVIM or ECVIM-CA specialist examination.
D. Employment/evaluations
The candidate's performance and progress are evaluated at least once a year (more frequently if necessary), discussed with the candidate and recorded in writing.
E. Applications
Applications for the resident position must be submitted with the following documents: 1. description of professional goals, 2. curriculum vitae, 3. three personal letters of recommendation, and 4. references.
The positions are generally advertised in September/October of the previous year.
