Residency
Specialization at the international level under the auspices of a so-called “college,” such as the European or American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, represents a significantly more intensive and advanced form of specialization than the German veterinary specialty training program.
The goal of this advanced training is to achieve specialization at the highest level. After completing an intensive, strictly regulated advanced training program, candidates must pass a highly demanding examination before an international examination committee. Upon passing the exam, they are awarded “Diplomate” status. Following their advanced training, Diplomates typically work at universities or referral clinics to maintain and further improve the quality of veterinary medicine through their specialized knowledge and skills.
European and American titles (Diplomates) can be obtained at the Equine Clinic in the following specialties:
- Internal Medicine (ECEIM or ACVIM)
- Animal Reproduction (ECAR)
- Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI)
- Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) alternative track
- Anesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) alternative track
- Ophthalmology (ECVO) alternative track
- Surgery (ECVS) - available soon
A prerequisite for participation in a residency program is an internship or equivalent advanced training. Depending on the program, a residency lasts three to four years and must be completed under the supervision of one or more board-certified specialists. Candidates are only admitted to the exam once all necessary requirements have been met, including completion of the required clinical training period, proof of publications and presentations at the national and international level, and a sufficient number of reviewed cases across various specialties. The exam is administered once a year during a European or American congress.
