Services in Radiology

The Radiology Department at the Equine Clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art digital X-ray systems, several ultrasound machines, a computed tomography (CT) scanner, a 1.5-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, and a mobile C-arm for fluoroscopy, intraoperative imaging, and image-guided procedures.

We are pleased to offer this broad range of imaging procedures for both our own patients and those referred to us. In addition to the senior physicians in surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, anesthesia, and critical care medicine, a specially trained radiologist (ECVDI residency) is available on-site to plan, perform, and interpret examinations. This allows even complex clinical issues to be addressed through an interdisciplinary approach, and findings to be immediately incorporated into treatment planning, surgical planning, and follow-up care.

Our services are designed for horses, foals, and ponies, as well as for selected cases involving other large and small animals, companion animals, and birds.

Please contact us in advance by phone at +49 89 2180 2627 or +49 173 2465627, or by email at pferdeklinik@lmu.de.

Referrals, Teleradiology, and Second Opinions

Please contact us by phone at +49 89 2180 2627 or by email at pferdeklinik@lmu.de for referrals, appointment scheduling, and inquiries regarding teleradiology reports or second opinions. The Radiology Department provides expert evaluation of radiological, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, as well as the interpretation of complex findings within a clinical context. These services are intended for referring veterinarians and pet owners.

Digital Radiography and Fluoroscopy

Digital X-ray examinations are performed on all relevant body regions, including the limbs, head, neck, spine, thorax, and abdomen. A mobile C-arm enables fluoroscopy, intraoperative imaging, and image-guided monitoring and interventions for surgical and orthopedic conditions.

Contrast-Enhanced Imaging

Depending on the clinical presentation, contrast-enhanced examinations are offered using various modalities (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound). These include arthrography, tenosynoviography, myelography, and dacryocystography.

Ultrasound Diagnostics

Ultrasound imaging covers orthopedic and internal medicine issues, particularly tendons, ligaments, joints, bone surfaces, soft tissues, the thorax (including the heart), the abdomen, and blood vessels. It is used for initial diagnosis, monitoring progress, and further evaluation of complex findings.

Computed Tomography

Depending on the indication and the patient, CT scans are performed under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Typical areas of interest include the head, teeth, paranasal sinuses, cervical spine, and limbs. For foals and ponies, whole-body CT scans are also possible, depending on their size and the specific clinical question.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The 1.5-Tesla MRI system enables high-resolution imaging of soft tissues, joints, bones, tendons, ligaments, and neurologically relevant structures (CNS). Our services include MRI examinations of the head with and without contrast agents, as well as of the limbs; other regions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis depending on body size, positioning, and the clinical question.

Endoscopy

The endoscopic services include flexible video endoscopy of the respiratory tract, gastroscopy, air sac endoscopy, otoscopy, proctoscopy, oral cavity endoscopy, and overground endoscopy for the dynamic assessment of the upper respiratory tract during exercise.

Note for Human Hospitals

The LMU Munich Equine Clinic offers CT and MRI scans for large animals using state-of-the-art equipment identical to that used in human medicine. In many cases, examinations on humans cannot or should not be performed - in such instances, we refer to the identical equipment used in human medicine.
