Lectures

In our courses, we provide solid knowledge on the most important infectious agents in domestic animals. The main focus is on the biology of:

  • bacteria, fungi, and viruses
  • their distribution (epidemiology)
  • the complex interactions between pathogen and host, as well as strategies for immunoprophylaxis

In doing so, we combine current research with practice-oriented teaching – for a deep understanding of infectious diseases in veterinary practice.

Courses

Within our compulsory bacteriology and mycology courses, students learn common methods of detection in clinical microbiology – and apply them independently.

The spectrum includes:
The isolation of pathogens using culture-based techniques, biochemical, serological, and molecular biological differentiation methods, as well as various approaches for antibody detection.

Supporting materials such as course manuals, images of bacterial and fungal cultures, and microscopic photographs are available via the faculty’s e-learning platform or directly during the course.

Elective Courses

Elective seminars are conducted as block courses by external lecturers at their respective institutes:

During the lecture period, regular events take place in the form of guest lectures and presentations by research groups. Members of the faculty as well as external guests are warmly invited. Announcements can be found under News.

Internships & Examinations

Internships

Within the framework of their major clinical internship, the institute offers veterinary students the opportunity to complete a minimum four-week internship. Master’s students and school pupils are also warmly invited to gain practical experience with us.

Applications, including a cover letter and CV, can be sent to:
sekretariat@micro.vetmed.uni-muenchen.de

Examinations

As part of the veterinary medicine curriculum, students are required to complete the following examinations at the institute:

  • Bacteriology and Mycology after the 7th semester
  • Control of Epizootic Diseases in the 11th semester

Further information for enrolled students is available here: Study Dean’s Office.

Doctoral Thesis

We offer you the opportunity to immerse yourself in an individual scientific topic and obtain a doctoral degree.

In a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment, you will work on current research questions in the field of bacterial and fungal pathogens. You will benefit from state-of-the-art methods, close supervision, and integration into ongoing research projects.

Your doctoral thesis with us is more than just an academic degree – it is the entry into independent scientific work and the opportunity to actively contribute to new insights in infection biology.

Join our team and help shape research that truly makes a difference – for science, animals, and humans.

Specialist Veterinarian Training

At the Chair of Bacteriology and Mycology at LMU Munich, we offer structured specialist veterinary training in three dedicated fields: Mycology, Bacteriology, and Immunology.

Depending on your area of interest, you can specialize in one of these disciplines and further develop your expertise in veterinary infection and immunobiology. All three fields are closely interconnected scientifically and provide an interdisciplinary, modern research and working environment.

In Mycology, the focus is on fungal pathogens, their biology, and diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. In Bacteriology, you will work on bacterial pathogens, their pathogenesis, and resistance mechanisms. The field of Immunology focuses on host–pathogen interactions as well as fundamental and applied aspects of immune responses.

You will work using state-of-the-art research and diagnostic methods and receive close individual supervision while being actively involved in current research projects. The close integration of science, diagnostics, and teaching enables comprehensive and practice-oriented training.

The goal is to prepare you optimally for certification as a specialist veterinarian in your chosen field while providing a solid foundation for a further scientific or diagnostic career.

Join our team and actively shape the future of veterinary infection research.

Postdoc & Habilitation

We offer excellent opportunities for the next career stage in academic research for scientists with a doctoral degree.

During a postdoctoral phase, you will have the opportunity to further deepen your scientific expertise, develop your own research projects, and advance your methodological and professional skills. You will work in an internationally networked, interdisciplinary environment and be actively involved in our ongoing research programs in mycology, bacteriology, and immunology.

For particularly qualified researchers, the opportunity for habilitation is available. We support you in building an independent scientific profile, developing your own research focus, and obtaining the formal qualification for academic teaching. The close integration of research, teaching, and scientific responsibility forms the basis for your further career in academic veterinary medicine.

Our goal is to support you on your path toward an independent scientific career and to provide an inspiring environment for innovative and impactful research.

Join our team and actively shape the future of infectious disease research.
