An examination of the cerebrospinal fluid is necessary for the diagnosis of inflammation (meningitis, encephalitis) of the central nervous system. A cerebrospinal fluid analysis is also often recommended for seizure disorders in younger animals to rule out meningoencephalitis. CSF puncture is performed under anesthesia. The cerebrospinal fluid is analyzed in the in-house laboratory immediately after the puncture has been completed. The cell content and protein content of the cerebrospinal fluid and cell differentiation are usually carried out. In individual cases, specific pathogens or antibodies can also be detected from the cerebrospinal fluid.
