EEG recordings are made to identify paroxysmal brain activity (spikes, wave and spike complexes) that indicate the presence of epileptic seizures. In neurology, electroencephalographic monitoring is used in the treatment of patients with status epilepticus.
However, brain wave measurements can not only provide important information for patients with epileptic seizures and convulsions/movement disorders of unknown cause as well as sleep disorders, they also help to precisely evaluate the response to antiepileptic therapy in emergency patients with status epilepticus (e.g. due to poisoning, but also for all other causes of seizure disorders) and adjust it as necessary. The diagnosis and treatment of seizure disorders is one of the internationally recognized focal points of the working group of Prof. Dr. Andrea Fischer (head neurologist).
