Services

Gastroenterology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with acute and chronic diseases of the upper and lower digestive tract, as well as diseases of the pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.

The team has been offering gastroenterology consultations for dogs and cats for many years.

New special consultation hour "Gut health for dogs and cats" in cooperation with Hill's Pet Nutrition GmbH

The most common reasons for seeking treatment include:

  • acute and chronic vomiting
  • regurgitate
  • acute and chronic diarrhea
  • increased stool volume or increased stool frequency
  • Hypo- and anorexia (lack of appetite)
  • weight loss
  • stomach ache
  • painful defecation or defecation behavior
  • Jaundice
  • Gastrointestinal screening

The most common diseases are:

  • Diseases of the esophagus, e.g., motility disorders and obstructions
  • Diseases of the liver and gallbladder, e.g., chronic hepatitis and bacterial cholecystitis
  • Diseases of the exocrine pancreas, e.g., acute or chronic pancreatitis and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
  • Stomach disorders, e.g., acute and chronic gastritis, tumor diseases
  • Intestinal disorders, e.g., acute and chronic enteritis, tumor diseases

The examination focuses on a detailed discussion with the pet owner, the assessment of findings, and a general clinical examination.

Further special examinations and therapeutic measures include, among others:

  • Determination of specific blood laboratory parameters
  • Stool examination for endoparasites
  • Investigation of the intestinal microbiota
  • fecal transplant
  • Fluoroscopic contrast agent swallow study
  • Contrast agent passage through the gastrointestinal tract
  • Positive contrast imaging of the colon
  • Depiction of congenital or acquired vascular diseases of the liver
  • Ultrasound examination of changes in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Clarification of structural liver parenchyma changes using contrast ultrasound
  • Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of, among other things, the liver, abdominal lymph nodes, or abdominal masses
  • ultrasound-guided gallbladder puncture
  • Percutaneous ultrasound-guided liver biopsy in focal lesions
  • Laparoscopic liver biopsy for generalized liver changes
  • Esophagoscopy, gastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy (mucosal biopsies, foreign body removal, stricture ballooning)
  • Insertion of feeding tubes (nasogastric, esophageal, gastric, jejunal tubes)
  • Monitoring and treatment of gastrointestinal intensive care patients, including parenteral intravenous nutrition
  • endoscopic gastropexy
