Age check

Recommendations from the Preventive Health Care Service of the LMU Small Animal Clinic

Certain diseases occur more frequently due to age, which is why we recommend six-monthly check-ups as you get older. This includes a thorough clinical examination as well as various laboratory tests and blood pressure checks. This allows changes to be detected at an early stage and measures to be taken to maintain or improve quality of life.
Ageing begins during the last 25% of the life expectancy assumed for the breed. Certain factors (such as breed, size, genetics, previous illnesses, diet) have an influence on ageing. On average, large dogs age faster than small dogs.

From a certain age, dogs and cats belong to the senior citizens:

Dogs depending on their size:

  • Large breeds from approx. 5 years of age (e.g. Great Dane)
  • Medium-sized breeds from approx. 9 years of age (e.g. Labrador)
  • Small breeds from approx. 10 years of age (e.g. Yorkshire terriers)

Cats from approx. 11 years

In contrast to human medicine, however, there is no evidence that old dogs and cats are more susceptible to infection. More frequent vaccinations are therefore not indicated for old animals.
